Ancient Tree Recorder (Devon)
This project is based only on Dartmoor in Devon, South West England. You need to live within 1 hour journey of Dartmoor to apply please.
Help us find, measure, map and assess ancient trees. Full training is provided and you can volunteer flexibly, on your own or in pairs, while making a real difference to Dartmoor’s landscape.
The Ancient Tree Inventory is a UK map of ancient and special trees. These trees are vital for our landscape, heritage and wildlife but don’t have specific legal protection. The information we collect helps raise awareness and is used by planners and ecologists to protect them for the future. The Woodland Trust runs this project in partnership with the Ancient Tree Forum and the Tree Register.
As a Dartmoor Ancient Tree Hunt recorder, you’ll visit agreed sites to record key details about ancient, veteran and notable trees, including location, size, species and photos. Your records will be checked and verified by trained volunteers.
The Dartmoor Ancient Tree Hunt aims to map 75% of Dartmoor’s ancient and veteran trees, with around 500 areas to cover over the next four years.. You can choose a 1km square to survey and after training, you can survey independently or join monthly group survey day.
Everyone deserves to have their lives enriched by woods and trees
To achieve our vision of a world where woods and trees thrive for people and nature, we need to better reflect society and the communities we work in. All people, no matter their background, identity, ability, or circumstance, should benefit from trees.
People of colour and disabled people are currently under-represented across the environment and conservation sector. If you identify as a person of colour and/or disabled, we particularly encourage you to apply.
Anyone under 18 applying for this role must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also registered as a Woodland Trust volunteer.
Please contact us to discuss any additional support or adjustments you may need to complete your application.
