Warden (West Lothian Woods)

Opportunity image

We are looking for volunteer Wardens to be our eyes on the ground across our woodland estates. Regularly walking routes through the wood, the volunteer Wardens will report issues to our Site Manager, and also note any interesting wildlife spotted in the wood. This role requires availability to visit the wood throughout the year, and is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys walking outdoors to help us care for local woodlands.

In West Lothian, mostly in Livingston, the Woodland Trust owns around 16 woods, ranging from the beautiful ancient woodland to thin, small shelterbelt strips of woodland, sometimes comprised of non-native conifers. When you apply for this role, please do let us know which wood or area you wish to volunteer in.

The 12 woods that the Woodland Trust owns in Livingston were gifted to the Trust after the Development Corporation completed its work in the area. Each warden appointed doesn't have to cover all the woods; exact locations to be included to be agreed with the volunteer manager at interview. However, when you apply for this role, please do let us know if there are particular woods you wish to volunteer in.

.

These are mostly urban woods and are subject to a variety of anti-social uses, such as fly tipping and litter. The Trust is working hard in partnership with the community and other local organisations to tackle these issues and bring the woods back into positive use, as they offer a great opportunity for a space for recreation and wildlife. A volunteer Woodland Working Group is also carries out conservation tasks in the woods, and a group of volunteer tree seed collectors collect seeds for us which are grown on by tree nurseries to plant back into our woods.

For this role you will need access to a phone, the internet and an email address, as well as suitable outdoor clothing for the site – including sturdy footwear.

Anyone under 18 applying for this role must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also registered as a Woodland Trust volunteer. The minimum age for this role is 16.
